The hardest thing to do with flash on a location portrait session is to use it in a way that adds to the photo but is almost imperceptible to the viewer. Known as fill flash or fill light, the art of getting it right is to use as little flash as possible but enough flash to lift the shadows. Portrait photographer Gavin Hoey steps out of his studio and into the garden for a photo session with a timeless look. The classic styling leans itself perfectly to a gentle touch of fill flash but, how is it done? Gavin starts by using on-camera TTL fill flash to get the photos but as he shows, the look isn’t as subtle as he’d like. Next Gavin switches to off-camera flash for his fill light. Using a small Flashpoint speedlight he takes you through the process of setting up high-speed sync flash and dialing in the perfect power. Finally, Gavin switches his flash and softbox choice to something a little larger. The Flashpoint XPLOR400 PRO flash and the Glow ParaSnap 36" Octa softbox allows Gavin to move the light further away but maintain the soft, fill flash look. Flash Fill is one of the most amazing features of Excel. It grabs a tedious task that would take hours to be performed manually and executes it automatically in a flash (hence the name). And it does so quickly and simply without you having to do a thing, but only provide an example of what you want. What is Flash Fill in Excel? Excel Flash Fill is a special tool that analyzes the information you are entering and automatically fills data when it identifies a pattern. The Flash Fill feature was introduced in Excel 2013 and is available in all later versions of Excel 2016, Excel 2019, Excel 2021, and Excel for Microsoft 365. Started in December 2009 as an attempt of Sumit Gulwani, a senior researcher at Microsoft, to help a businesswoman he accidentally met at the airport with her merging challenge, a few years later it has evolved into a powerful ability to automate many Excel chores. Flash Fill easily copes with dozens of different tasks that otherwise would require complex formulas or even VBA code such as splitting and combining text strings, cleaning data and correcting inconsistencies, formatting text and numbers, converting dates to the desired format, and a lot more. Each time, Flash Fill combines millions of small programs that might accomplish the task, then sorts those code snippets using machine-learning techniques and finds the one that suits best for the job. All this is done in milliseconds in the background, and the user sees the results almost immediately! In this video, we'll teach you how to use the flash fill function in Excel. If Excel recognizes a pattern, the flash fill function allows to automatically fill the data, according to that pattern, in the remaining cells. So, let’s say we have a sheet over here with employee names, with first name and last name of each employee present in separate columns. The data in the full name column will follow a standard pattern throughout the sheet, which is “First Name” … “Space” followed by the last name. So let’s use the Flash Fill function to quickly do this for the whole sheet. ➡️ To make sure that you have Flash Fill Function enabled, go to he File menu and move to Options. ➡️ Once the Excel Options pop up window opens up, move the Advanced section and over here under the “Enable AutoComplete for cell values” option you can see that the Flash Fill option is enabled. ➡️ Now let’s head back to the sheet. So, first of all we have to establish a pattern in the full name column so that Excel can recognize it and auto fill the remaining cells. ➡️ Over here, you can see that I am manually entering the first name and last name of for the first two rows here. ➡️ The moment I move to the third row and start typing, excel determines a pattern and shows us a preview of the output. You can simply press Enter and the whole column will be automatically filled. ➡️ Alternatively, once you have established a pattern in the first row, you can select the cell, move the cursor to the corner of the cell and when the cursor icon changes to a plus sign, press the right mouse button and drag the cursor down to all the cells you want to automatically fill. Once you release the button, a menu will open up. From here, you can select the Flash Fill option, and Excel will automatically populate data in the specific pattern for the selected cells. ➡️ And the easiest way to go about it is to enter data in the first row to determine a pattern. Next, move to the Data tab and in the “Data Tools” section click on the “Flash Fill” option. Excel will populate the data in the selected cells automatically. And that’s it! ❓💬 Which Excel function would you like to know more about? Auto Fill is a feature designed to quickly populate a series or pattern of data into adjacent cells. To use Auto Fill, you enter the desired value or series of values in a cell and then click and drag the fill handle (a small square at the bottom-right corner of the selected cell) over the range of cells where you want the data to be filled. Excel automatically fills the selected cells based on the established pattern. This feature is helpful for copying and extending existing data patterns, such as numbers, dates, days of the week, and more. It saves time and eliminates the need for manual input. On the other hand, Flash Fill is a feature introduced in Excel 2013 and later versions. Its purpose is to automatically extract or format data based on recognized patterns. With Flash Fill, you start typing a value or pattern in a column adjacent to the data you want to manipulate. As you type, Excel analyzes the data and attempts to identify a pattern. If Excel recognizes the pattern correctly, it provides a preview of how the remaining data will be filled. You can then press Enter or click on the Flash Fill button to complete the operation. Flash Fill is particularly useful when you need to split, combine, extract, or format data based on recognized patterns. For example, if you have a list of full names in one column and want to separate them into first and last names in two columns, Flash Fill can automatically recognize the pattern and fill the adjacent cells accordingly. In summary, Auto Fill is primarily used for quickly extending existing data patterns, while Flash Fill is focused on automatically extracting or formatting data based on recognized patterns. Both features are designed to streamline data entry tasks and improve productivity in Microsoft Excel. #microsoft #excel #exceltips #tips #exceltricks #tricksandtips

Video tutorial: TTL fill-flash This video tutorial on TTL fill-flash settings, is the visual counterpart to this article – Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC). Whether you use on-camera bounce flash, or off-camera TTL flash as in this off-camera flash tutorial, you will need to adjust your FEC to control the amount of TTL flash you get. Adjusting the FEC allows you varying degrees of fill-flash. This video and the linked article on flash exposure compensation explains a sequence where you get to compare how different levels of fill-flash affect your final photograph. Check these two links for more info: 🤍 🤍 This video tutorial is one in a series that originally appeared on the Clickin’ Moms website in 2012, but licensing has now reverted back to me, and here we are – a tutorial that might be dated in terms of some of the gear used, but the principles remain the same. In conjunction with all the other articles about off-camera flash photography, these videos should make a good primer on the topic of off-camera flash.
Flash Fill is an Excel feature that intelligently spots patterns in your data to fill the gaps with generated values. There are no formulas involved! For example, if you want to split a list of names into two separate columns, do the following: 1) Enter any first name adjacent to the original set. 2) Select Data ＞ Flash Fill or press Ctrl + E to populate the rest of the column. 3) Repeat the previous steps for the last name. Alternatively, type the opening two first or last names for Excel to show a preview of suggestions — then press Return to confirm them. For other scenarios, it may take more entries for a pattern to be established, depending on the complexity. #Excel #FlashFill #NoFormulas The Global Excel Summit is the world's largest virtual gathering of Microsoft Excel users and experts.
