Goal Seek in Excel works by calculating what value will give you your desired formula result by changing a certain input. For example, if you need to know how many units you need to sell in order to reach your revenue goal. One of Excel's What-if Analysis tools, Goal Seek lets you set the value you'd like for your formula to result in. Once you do, Goal Seek will calculate for you to let you know what value you need to use. For example, in a calculation like 15 x ?? = 75, the result of Goal Seek would be 5. This tutorial shows an example of how to use the Goal Seek function in Excel to solve for what inputs we need in order to achieve certain outputs. First we review an Excel model that we then analyze using Goal Seek analysis. Many times when we have a data model (financial or otherwise) we are are trying to figure out how to achieve a certain outcome, or how to solve for certain numbers. When analyzing situations like this, we often need to use "guess and check" to try to figure out how to get the outputs that we want. Fortunately for us, we don't have to do this manually. There are a few functions on the "Data" tab (of Excel) under the "What-If-Analysis" button. All of these functions help us try to figure out which inputs we need to get certain outputs. In this video we use Goal Seek Analysis to solve for how to achieve a 20% profit margin. We change many different assumptions - price, units sold, etc - using the Goal Seek function to try to solve this complicated scenario. The goal seek function in Excel is a finance person’s secret weapon, and I will help you understand how to use it! Have you ever been in one of those grueling budgeting or forecasting sessions, where you have endless discussions about things like revenue and headcount? Usually, the finance person is the one picking up the pieces after the meeting, to make sure everything is correctly reflected in the spreadsheets. Here’s one such spreadsheet: the cash flow forecast spreadsheet. The months are at the top here, then the opening cash balance by month, various types of cash movements (inflows and outflows) during the month, and the expected cash ending balance down here. Now you’ve probably noticed the number in red for June. A negative cash balance. That’s not supposed to happen. That number needs to be at least zero. You bring it up to your manager, who responds “aaah, just plug it”, or “just fix the spreadsheet”. That’s where you take out the secret weapon called “goal seek”: it’s a tool that gives you the ability to calculate backward to obtain an input that would result in a given output. Let’s see how goal seek works. Use Goal Seek in #Excel to find the result you want by adjusting an input value. If you know the result that you want from a formula, but are not sure what input value the formula needs to get that result, use the #goalseek feature!
