Join the discord server! 🤍 So, I’m starting as a graphics programmer… and I soon figure out that I need a graphics API to effectively interface with the graphics driver… and so I come across OpenGL and Vulkan… but there are just so many conflicting sources on which one I should choose. For example, some claim that OpenGL is old and slow; and some claim that Vulkan is way too hard to learn, of which I disagree with all the claims. This is Graphics Rush and this is the part where I beg you to subscribe and join the discord server at tinyurl.com/graphicsrush. Let’s begin with OpenGL. The internet calls it old and slow… and I disagree with this because, even though newer technologies are released, it usually doesn’t make the older ones obsolete. Even though Vulkan and newer APIs DO perform better than OpenGL, OpenGL is certainly not slow… and remember, if your program has poorly written code, it doesn’t matter what graphics API you’re using, your program is going to perform poorly. Moving on to Vulkan, the internet calls it too complex for the beginner… but there’s actually a HUGE difference between complexity and verbosity. Complexity means made of multiple parts and hard to navigate around, while verbosity simply means expressing more. And I believe that all APIs have the same amount of complexity, even OpenGL. Vulkan is just a little bit more *verbose* and makes you write out more code.

Presentation of our paper: "The Road to Vulkan: Teaching Modern Low-Level APIs in Introductory Graphics Courses" by Johannes Unterguggenberger, Bernhard Kerbl, and Michael Wimmer. It was presented at Eurographics 2022 in Reims, France. Abstract: For over two decades, the OpenGL API provided users with the means for implementing versatile, feature-rich, and portable real-time graphics applications. Consequently, it has been widely adopted by practitioners and educators alike and is deeply ingrained in many curricula that teach real-time graphics for higher education. Over the years, the architecture of graphics processing units (GPUs) incrementally diverged from OpenGL's conceptual design. The more recently introduced Vulkan API provides a more modern, fine-grained approach for interfacing with the GPU. Various properties of this API and overall trends suggest that Vulkan could soon replace OpenGL in many areas. Hence, it stands to reason that educators who have their students' best interests at heart should provide them with corresponding lecture material. However, Vulkan is notoriously verbose and rather challenging for first-time users, thus transitioning to this new API bears a considerable risk of failing to achieve expected teaching goals. In this paper, we document our experiences after teaching Vulkan in an introductory graphics course side-by-side with conventional OpenGL. A final survey enables us to draw conclusions about perceived workload, difficulty, and students' acceptance of either approach and identify suitable conditions and recommendations for teaching Vulkan to undergraduate students. Short video showing an updated version of my procedurally generated infinite terrain rendering playground using Vulkan. Lots of new additions that make it now look more like a real terrain with proper foliage and forests. This updated version adds in a dynamic, distance based grass layer and order-independent transparency using multisampling and alpha-to-coverage. Lots of optimizations have been done to keep a framerate above 60 fps even with dense forests, grass and shadows. These optimizations including dynamic draw batch generation, imposters for trees in the distance, single-pass shadow cascade rendering using multiview and CPU side culling. Still lots to do in terms of optimization, but at least visually it's now getting close to what I initially envisioned. Framerate sadly took a hit due to the video recoding and is better and more stable in the actual application.
