Bird business! Female great hornbill with 152-cm wingspan builds nest in tiny tree hollow. Will she and her eggs survive?
Great Hornbill Male & female nest for chicks | Rare Great Hornbill Nesting behaviour & berry feeding Great Hornbill Male & female build nest, Mate for life | Rare Great Hornbill Nesting & berry feeding Great Hornbill couple build nest, Mate for life, wild love | Rare Great Hornbill Nesting & feeding The Great hornbill or the great Indian hornbill is found in the Indian subcontinent. This rare wild video documentation explains the nesting behaviour of the Great Hornbill male and female. The great hornbill breeding season is mostly from January to April and once they pair-up, most hornbills mate for life. They prefer mature forests for nesting and search for large, tall and old trees, preferably the ones rise above the canopy and with the hollow in a large trunk. The female hornbill builds a nest in the hollow of the large tree trunk, sealing the opening with a plaster made up mainly of feces or fecal matters after digesting the mud. Females are smaller than males and have bluish-white instead of red eyes. They are important dispersers of many forest tree species. She remains inside, relying on the male to bring her food, until the chicks are half developed. The female is fed by her mate through a slit in the seal and then later even the mother/chicks are fed by the Male Hornbill. During this period the female undergoes a complete moult. The clutch consists of one or two eggs, which she incubates for 38–40 days. The female voids faces through the nest slit, as do the chicks from the age of two weeks. The young chicks have no feathers and appear very plump. Once the female emerges from the nest, the chicks seal it again. Full development of chicks takes upto five years. The great hornbill is long-lived, living for nearly 50 years in captivity. It is predominantly frugivorous, but is an opportunist and will prey on small mammals, reptiles and birds. Due to habitat loss and hunting in some areas, the great hornbill is evaluated as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Young dwarf mongoose fakes a death faint when faced with a yellow billed hornbill.
Great Hornbill (Male) trying to feed their young one. Probably a barbet chick kill. The Great hornbill is a large colorful bird found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Males and females are similar except that the irises of males are red while those of females are white, and males have slightly larger bills and casques. These birds are active during the day and when the night comes, they gather in large communal roosts on the highest branches with little foliage. Great hornbills mainly forage along branches, moving along by hopping, feeding on fruits and looking for insects, nestling birds, and small lizards, tearing up bark and examining them. Prey is caught, tossed in the air and swallowed. In one day Great hornbills can visit several fruiting trees and travel long distances to feed.

The Great Indian HornBill's Symphony Of Life
What does it take to photograph the helmeted hornbill? Patience. National Geographic photographer Tim Laman teamed up with Rangkong Indonesia and spent months in the field just to get a glimpse of the extremely rare bird. The helmeted hornbill is one of 57 hornbill species in Africa and Asia. It’s found only in the lowland forests of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and southern Thailand. The helmeted hornbill stands apart from the other hornbills because its casque—the horny helmet above its beak—is mostly solid with a thick layer of keratin. But that unique trait might also be the birds' undoing. Softer than ivory and easily carved, hornbill casques are in high demand in Asia, to be fashioned into beads, pendants, and intricate works of art. Illegal poaching has caused this bird to be on the critically endangered list. ➡ Subscribe: 🤍 #NationalGeographic #HelmetedHornbill #EndangeredSpecies About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. “And for your serious bird watchers, over there is a hornbill. Looks like he's really gone out on a limb this time. If he's not careful, he's going to wind up a snack for those crocodiles.” 🐊 “Over there is a rare species of hornbill… about to become a little more rare.” “When we did the Jungle Cruise refurbishment in 1976, Marc had very specific sounds in his mind that these different animals, like the baboons and hornbills, would make. He’d been on the rivers in Africa and New Guinea. So, he sat there and we’d find sounds in the library. We didn’t have a very extensive sound effects library in those days, but he’d show me the artwork and then kind of describe what the sounds were. To be honest with you, I didn’t have a real hornbill, so I had to try to find things that sounded like it might fit. He said, ‘It should be kind of calm, like this bird is just hanging out there, and then when the boat goes by, he gets real agitated.’ So I found a couple of different bird sounds that did that, even though we kind of bent reality on it.” - Glenn Barker #junglecruise #disneyhistory #hornbill #disneyland #disneylandhistory #disneysecrets #disneytrivia #disneyfacts #disneyfactsyoudontknow #adventureland #imagineering #marcdavis #disneyparks #retrodisney #disneyvintage #tradersams #disneyrides #disneyattractions
